Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Biren Singh Engti passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 90 at Health City Hospital in Guwahati, where he had been undergoing treatment after collapsing at his residence in Diphu the previous evening. He breathed his last at 7:46 AM, leaving behind a political legacy spanning several decades and seven terms in Parliament.

Engti represented the Diphu Lok Sabha constituency seven times — a remarkable feat that reflected both his personal connect with the electorate and his stature as one of the most prominent political voices from the hill districts of Assam. During his long parliamentary career, he also served as a Union Minister of State in the Government of India, bringing the concerns of Assam’s hill communities to the national stage. He was widely regarded as an unwavering advocate for the people of the region throughout his decades of public service.

Family members confirmed that Engti suddenly lost consciousness at his Diphu residence on Monday after suffering a pressure-related health episode. He was immediately shifted to Guwahati for treatment, but passed away the following morning. He is survived by two sons and a daughter.

His mortal remains will be transported from Guwahati to his residence in Diphu, where they will be kept for three days to allow the public, political colleagues, and well-wishers to pay their last respects to a leader who devoted his life to the people of Assam’s hill districts.
